good morning. it has been one week since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at a connecticut elementary school. how those victims are being remembered. we are live in san pablo where an overnight fire destroyed the front of a home. we'll tell you what firefighters think may have caused the fire. san francisco international airport prepares for one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season. we'll tell you what conditions are like at the airport and why the conditions could change lar today. we are gearing up for a wet, windy morning commute. i'll have what you can expect

in a moment. good morning. it is friday, december 21st i'm tori campbell in for pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather, traffic, steve is off. rosemary orozco is here today. you mean i need an umbrella today? >> yes unfortunately and i would say keep it handy for the entire weekend. we have three systems. the first one moving in this morning and the second on saturday the third on sunday. let's take a look at the where the rain is falling. it's been over the north bay for several hours. santa rosa picked up a half inch of rain already so far this morning. we have pretty good rain falling along highway 101 at windsor at this time. you will find this visibility is low. it is breezy at times. we do have a wind advisory for parts of san francisco as well as the peninsula. this rain has pretty much stood right over the north bay. it will continue to slide south as we move through the morning commute. i will have what you can expect

for your area and i'll have a look at your weekend coming up. good morning, sal. rosemary good morning. you spoke about the winds the chp has issued a wind advisory for the bridge to let drivers know it will be windy across that span. both of us will be reminding you about that. san mateo bridge traffic looks pretty good. now let's go back to the desk. in the news this morning more rain and a lot of it headed into the bay area today as holiday travel really starlets to pick up. ktvu allie rasmus live at sfo to tell us what is happening out there and what is expected to be one of the busiest days of the holiday season. >> reporter: that rainy weather could have an impact on your travel plans if you're flying in and out of sfo. so far so good. we checked and there are no cancellations or delays to report. it is really busy out here though. if you take a look behind us you can see the taxis and cars and shuttles lining up along the curb here unloading passengers as they prepare to

check in for their flight. this is the peak travel day of the holiday season with 130,000 people expected to pass through sfo. an estimated two million people are expected to come through between now and january 6th. inside the terminal we kept monitoring the board. we've been here since 3:30 this morning. we keep checking and there have been no delays or cancellations in and out of sfo. everything is leaving on time. and no delayed arrivals either. a couple flights from the east coast are scheduled to arrive 10-15 minutes early. all of this could change later today. keep in mind with stormy weather expected here in the bay area. passengers we talked to say we really can't change your travel plans. >> i planned two months ago. >> you can't really plan for weather. >> exactly. >> i didn't think about it too much. i thought about the times and the times i wanted to go. i thought if it was early it didn't matter too much.

i'm betting there is a going to be a lot of people traveling. >> reporter: the first big snowstorm of the season in the midwest did lead to canceled flights in and out of sfo. mostly from chicago. but again this morning no cancellations or delays to report in and out of sfo. that could change keep in mind later on today as we are expected to get some rainy stormy weather here. so the advice is always the same get to your flight early and check with your airline before you arrive. live at sfo allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >> in the meantime a winter storm one that dumped more than a foot of snow in the federal u.s. has disrupted air travel. it's now over the great lakes. at least seven deaths have been reported including three in iowa. victims were killed in a 30 car pileup on interstate 35. also the power was knocked out for 400,000 homes anopias in -- homes and businesses in about

13 states. o'hare airport canceled hundreds of flights. o'hare is the hub for united airlines. flights are expected to be back on schedule today. it is coming up on 5:04. overnight a police chase ended in a firey crash in antioch. it happened after 1:30 this morning on highway 4. a robbery suspect hit a retaining wall during a police chase and his car burst into flames. the suspect managed to get out of the car and run off but he was found about two blocks away. and taken to the hospital. also in overnight news fire torched the inside of a san pablo home. lorraine blanco is live at the scene on collin street with details on what may have led to this emergency. good morning, lorraine. >> reporter: good morning. it's barely a a.m. you -- it's barely 5:00 a.m. you can see a crew is hard at

work here boarding up the door and windows. battalion chief on scene told us it looks like it could have started with improperly disguarded smoking material. when firefighters arrived around 2:00 a.m. they encountered a lot of smoke and flames coming from the living room here. they were able to get it taken care of quickly. there is extensive damage inside. >> although somebody does live here, they were not home at the time. they will be displaced. the property is unlivable right now. >> reporter: the baa tullian chief says they are not calling in arson investigator at this time and does not look suspicious. the good news is no one was injured in this early morning fire. reporting live in san pac row lorraine blanco. >> thank you. it's 5:05. san francisco police have detained a driver they say hit a group of pedestrians near

twin peaks. one victim told ktvu he was with his mother and two friends at a scenic overlook when a speeding car hit three. firefighters used ropes and back boards to rescue them. officers are piecing together what happened. >> we looked at all kinds of factors including intoxication of the driver. the vehicle commitment was it funsing properly. a sick described a woman in her 50s. one week ago today we were all stunned by the newtown, connecticut school shooting massacre. this morning at 6:30 there will be a national moment of silence in memory of the victim. churches in connecticut will if ringing their bells 26 times all morning for the 20 students

and six adults killed. there will be funerals or memorials for four more children and for two adults who were killed. >> all of us have a son or daughter or nephew or a cousin or somebody that is really, really close to us. all of us feel connected to children. and those who help children. >> investigators are still searching for a motive for that mass shooting. the vigils here in the bay area and all over the country will continue. this afternoon a south bay congregation will hold a prayer service at 12:30. the dominican sisters of mission will be holding a memorial. new this morning president obama says his administration has received an outpouring of support for stricter gun laws following the connecticut school shooting. >> and in the days since the heartbreaking tragedy in newtown, connecticut. hundreds of thousands of you from all 50 states have signed petitions asking us to take serious steps to address the

epidemic of gun violence in this country. >> in a video posted online this morning, the president says he has been encouraged by comments even from gun owners who say there are steps the nation can take to prevent more deadly shootings. president obama will also hold a moment of violence at 6:30 this morning our time at the white house to mark one week since the shooting that killed 20 children and six adults at newtown sandy hook elementary school. the shooters mother was also killed. and at 7:45 this morning the national rifle association scheduled a news conference to weigh in over the debate over gun control. the powerful gun lobby says it's prepared to offer meaningful contributions to prevent mass shootings. this will be the nra first public response to the shooting. the jobs of about 800 chevron workers will be moving

novato seeing pretty good rain over the city. near redwood boulevard. you are going to find this. over the sierra pretty much dry. we have a snow level above 3,000 feet later today. and a winter storm warning starting this morning and lasting the entire weekend. which means if you are traveling this way be prepared for that. keep a full tank of gas always a good idea. this parent system will sit out here for the entire wicked and continue to end us rounds of rain. we are seeing gusty conditions. anywhere from 10-20 miles an hour. gusts stronger than that over the hills. there is a wind advisory for the peninsula and san francisco through 10:00 a.m.. here's a look at your extended forecast numbers this morning because of the clouds not as cool. i'm going to show you those numbers coming up. afternoon highs will remain

it is 5:14. we're following developing news out of north korea. the north korean government says it has detained an american citizen who it says has confessed to unspecified crimes. this is the first time north korea has confirmed news reports about the arrest of 44- year-old kenneth bay. north korea has detained several americans in recent years but they were all eventually released. time is 5:15. a big blow for house speaker john boehner. he sent members of the house home for the holidays after being forced to cancel a vote on his own fiscal cliff plan b. as ktvu kilah campbell reports. a deal could now be in the hands of the democrats. >> reporter: house speaker john

boehner just announced he will be speaking to the media in less than two hours. he did not have the support he needed from republicans last night. boehner left the capitol after that vote. he released a statement saying it's up to harry reid and president obama to come up with a plan to avoid going over the fiscal cliff. the white house released a statement saying the president is confident he and congress will quickly come up with a plan. i spoke with a senate republican who said he was told to go home for christmas be to be back in town and ready to work on thursday in order to come up with a deal before the deadline. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. this morning president obama and vice president joe biden will be among those paying attribute to senator daniel at a noaa service. yesterday mourners paid their respects to the lodge-time

senator from hawaii. senator inouye lost an arm in world war ii and represented hawaii in congress for 50 years. the 88-year-old senator died monday from respiratory complications. his body will be returned to hawaii tomorrow. time now just turning 5:17. a former u.s. marine praised for voluntarily guarding a school apparently lied about his military service. monday craig showed up to hughson elementary school and stood guard. he said he was a sergeant in the marine reserves and deployed to afghanistan. but the marines say he never served overseas and discharged as a private after serving nine months. some of the parents say the school should have performed a background check. >> yust to make sure that they are who they say they are. because anybody can do it.

rosemary and i have been talking about the winds all morning long. chp is warning drivers on bridges to be extra careful. also this morning speaking of the bridge westbound bay bridge approach looks good driving over the bridge into san francisco. and there are no major problems by the way in the livermore valley on westbound 580. this is one of the earliest commutes. which we still haven't seen a good traffic. over the north bay where the rain is coming down at times. light steady rain and then moderate in some area. highway 101 we watched over windsor in the last half hour. calistoga has seen it pretty good at times. pacific satellite view a broader view this is the apparent system. storm number one coming through this morning. leaving us with periods of rain for the afternoon. storm number two saturday morning. storm number three on sunday. here we are this morning.

we get through the 7:00 hour. it's slowly shifting south. look how long it takes. 8:00 hour we are still dealing with dry conditions over pleasanton and san jose. by 8:00 and 9:00 it shifts into san jose. and then by 9:00 steady light rain continuing. tapers off scattered showers. you know what that means. an own off mostly cloudy throughout the day. if you have evening plans tonight, prepare with an umbrella. tomorrow morning while e we're sleeping it's really coming down. by 9:00, 10:00 we are doing holiday shopping and we have scattered showers in the forecast. saturday looks pretty good. maybe a few scattered showers. mostly cloudy. sunday morning we wake up, more rain on the way. that is round three. here we are now sunday afternoon late afternoon and it's finally pulling away. we've got rain. on the other hand we've got some relatively mild temperatures. upper 40s and low 50s outside your door this morning. a milder air mass now in place.

afternoon highs going to be cool. mid to upper 50s in the forecast for most of us. your extended forecast here showing you a pretty soggy weekend. numbers budge ever so slightly but again that rain returning tomorrow morning, returning on sunday morning, and leave a chance for some rain christmas evening christmas day. how much rain we're expecting coming up. >> thank you. 5:21. all the major european markets opened with losses today as investors worried about the lack of compromise at a u.s. budget deal. that followed the trend from asia where all the markets finished down. south korea, japan and taiwan lost a percent. and taking a look at where the markets will start. the markets were all up yesterday. they have been upmost of the week because of optimism about avoiding the fiscal cliff but because the gop plan b fell apart yesterday. the markets are all down

significantically right now. the futures are all down. the dow is down 164. the futures are at the moment. we'll keep an eye on this. the markets open in over an hour. a record number of americans spent time ordering holiday gifts from online stores which offered free shipping for packages to arrive before christmas. but now many of those packages may not make it to their destinations by christmas because of the bad weather we just had in the midwest. ups expected to deliver $28 million packages yesterday. which is twice as many as on a normal day. storms shut down service in parts of iowa and nebraska and some packages had to be diverted. taking them longer to reach their final destination. so yeah. hopefully you will get your packages on time. marijuana a major focus in federal court. the reason one bay area city is supporting a marijuana dispensary in its fight to stay in business. the woman who represented a u.s. at three olympics responds

time now 5:25. throw-time olympic track star suzie admitted she was once a prostitute. she won seven national track titles as a middle distance runner. now she confirmed she once worked for a las vegas escort service to deal with a failing marriage and with depression. she's gone public with this after it was reported at the time she earned as much as $600 an hour as a prostitute. she says she is now getting counseling. it's 5:26. the federal government wants to close down an oakland pot dispensary. the largest in the nation. it has 100,000 patients and earns more than $20 million a year by selling medical marijuana. the federal government wants to shut the center down and seize its property. a judge is considering whether this landmark case should go to trial. the city of oakland is siding with the center which pays

>> and i'm tori campbell in for pam cook temperature it is -- it is 5:31. let's check in with rosemary for a look at the weather. rain is coming and it's a lot warmer. it's 20 degrees warmer. >> you're right. the air mass a lot milder. most of us in the 40s and 50s out there. you will notice that. if and for some of us still dry. it's over the north bay where the rain has just been hung up over the last several hours. santa rosa reporting more than a half inch at this time. moderate to heavy rain falling in some area. then you get south of the golden gate south of i-80 and we are cloudy. we don't have any rain drops just yet. you can see calistoga seeing pretty good rain. the visibility is poor in some cases. light to moderate rain falling over petaluma. i'll break this down for you what you can expect for your morning drive and holiday

weekend. hi sal. northbound 101 traffic in san francisco is moving along very nicely coming up to the 80 split with no major delays and southbound 101 looks good from san francisco down to the peninsula. if you are driving to the bay bridge toll plaza, we are getting a little crowded here. let's go back to the desk. >> we are following developing news in san jose. the investigation of a homicide. ktvu janine de la vega is there with the latest details of what happened and where. janine. >> reporter: we are here on oakland road at a business park. the homicide unit is in route. they quarantined off this area where you see the agency. that is a photography business where the man was fatally stabbed. police say they received a 911 call around 3:00 this morning a man had been stabbed at that business called the agency. they arrived and found a group of people at the scene who say they were having a party when a

fight happened. >> we do know it was some type of argument. what it's about we still don't know. we have several witnesses we're talking to and none of the suspects have been identified at this point. >> reporter: some witnesses left the scene before police arrived. we know the man was stabbed in his stomach. he was rushed to the hospital where he died soon after. now it's unknown if the stabbing occurred inside that business or outside in the parking lot. the police tell us they haven't started gathering evidence just yet because they are waiting for the homicide unit to get out here. and back out here live, we can see that it looks like a mobile command unit has just arrived here on the scene. so we're expecting investigators to be out here and to see a lot more activity going on. i did speak with one person who was inside the business when it happened. he was too shaken up to talk. but he did tell me that it was

a graduation party that was being celebrated here tonight. the other information we know about the victim is that it was a man in his 30s. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. it is coming up on 5:35. in less than an hour there will be a nation-wide moment of silence for the victims of the newtown shooting. this marks one week since the school tragedy. connecticut churches will ring their bells 26 times for the 20 children and six adults killed at sandy look elementary. governor jerry brown california is asking all californians to join in the moment of silence. and we will be going live to newtown at 6:30 in order to cover that. also at that same time traffic on the internet could plummet. gun control supporters have created a website calling for a web blackout at 6:30 this morning. pacific time. it's an online moment of silence for the newtown

victims. companies taking part include aol, and adobe. celebrities that signed up include arnold schwarzenegger. joe montana. and mc hammer. in san jose more than 60 people were at a bay area vigil for the shooting victims. now buddhist monks joined a very diverse group of people at this newtown memorial. it was held at the santa clara county building and featured this christmas tree with the photographs of each first grader and educator who was shot and killed. >> oh my god. i was like. i was really scared but my friends were really scared too. >> that very special christmas tree will stay up through the end of this year. in fact, you're encouraged to leave condolence messages or

hang a handwritten ornament. we are learning more this morning about a raid at a connecticut gun store linked to the shooting at sandy hook elementary. police raided the business in east windsor connecticut after learning a man with a history of schizophrenia stole an assault rifle. the raid was to inventory the weapons. police also believe that one of the weapons used in the sandy hook shooting rampage was purchased at that store. your time is 5:37. evernight fire in -- overnight fire in san pablo has left one person without a place to live. lorraine blanco has the latest on what happened out there. so where are you? what happened, lorraine? >> reporter: dave, we're on the 1400 block of collin street in san pablo. no one was home at the time of the fire. but you can see a whole crew of

men boarding up the windows and doors to the secure the property. firefighters tell us they have a pretty good idea what may have ignited an overnight fire. when firefighters arrived around 2:00 a.m. they saw a lot of smoke and flames coming from the living room of this single story home. they were able to get those flames under control quickly. >> right now it's still under investigation possibly discarded smoking material. >> reporter: the battalion chief from the fire department says they are not calling an arson investigator at this time and it does not look suspicious. the good news is no one was injured and firefighters were able to contain the fire to one home. reporting live in san pablo lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 news. it is 5:38. santa trading his sleigh in this morning for a motorcycle to bring joy to some children

in oakland. the sixth annual motor santa operation starts in just a few hours. it's always a great sight. santa and the police team will ride their motorcycles through the city to pass out toys to children. the toys were purchased with money donated from the oakland police motorcycle drill team. >> if they were rolling now, traffic is moving pretty good right? it is doing pretty well. we had a couple things pop up in the last few minutes. people are getting on the road. the wicked will get your attention this -- the wind will get your attention this morning. let's take a look at the commute here at the toll plaza, it's a nice looking drive with no major problems going through. it connues to look good all the way into san francisco. speaking of san francisco northbound 101 traffic that looks good approaching the 80 split. we're off to a nice start here. you can see the winds shaking our camera. if you are driving on 880 southbound let's say from hayward town to fremont it's

still a nice drive. let's go to rosemary. wet in some areas. windy in others. the first in a series of systems beginning to move through the the bay area. north bay moved in late last night. santa rosa reporting half inch. some of the heavier rain polling along calistoga. we have rain when you see the arrange and reds. this continues to shift out of the way. it's just not sitting here. this is where we see moderil to heavy rain at this time. you will find some light rain falling. to moderate in your area. as i shift south, notice it's just knot of san rafael. and the bay till dry. and everybody is sell dry. moving very, very slow but by 7:00, 8:00 most of us will be

moment of silence for the connecticut school shooting victims. governor jerry brown wants all of california to be a part of this. in the meantime more funerals or memorial services today for four students and two adults. san francisco police say they have now detained a hit and run driver accused of injuring four pedestrians in the twin peaks area last night. three people had to be rescued after a car knocked them off a road and down a hillside. one of the victims suffered life threatening injuries. 130,000 passengers expected to go through sfo today. this is expected to be the busiest travel day of the holiday season. the rush comes as yet another round of heavy rain moves into the bay area. it's not right now causing any major travel delays. it is 5:45. vallejo police say they need your help to find the hit and run driver who killed a man and his dog. the victims were found at the
